I've seen so many people on dA painting 'popular artists' with the same brush - mean, pompous, rich assholes. I'm so curious, where does this come from? At what point do you consider an artist 'popular' anyway?

It especially frustrates me when people downright say that certain artists are undeserving of the attention they get. That's so nasty. Making a sweeping judgement on someones character over something they have no control over?  All the 'popular' people I've ever had the pleasure of talking to are hardworking, intelligent people. And I think that what dA seems to forget sometimes - they are people. Just regular people.

Thanks for all the comments and opinions! Man, so many of you guys have had just awful experiences, and I dont blame you for being wary. It makes me worried for the next generation of people on art sites - ones that see popular artists today as people to be feared, rather than people to be admired. It's an awful trend, one that I really hope can be broken.

Sadly (very sadly) over the internet popular artists tends to make a circle with each other. They tend to ignore people that are not on their level (artistically speaking) and treat them with contempt.
Heck, more than once I've been treated as an immature loser because of my crappy art.

I think it's sad because even people like me, who will NEVER be pro artists (I am an engineer and I don't have time to study art), should be encouraged. I draw just for fun and being belittled frankly takes away a lot of the fun of posting art on this site.
